“I Hate Reading” to 100 Books a Year — How COVID Made Me Dangerous

I Used to Hate Books. Now I Swear by Them.

Before 2020, I was one of those people who said, “I don’t like reading.”

I thought books were for professors, librarians, and lonely people with cats.

I was broke, busy, and allergic to anything with more than two paragraphs.

But I’ve since learned something:

When someone says, “I don’t have time to read,” what they really mean is:

“I don’t have time to mine gold that could change my life in five hours.”

The Accidental Audiobook That Changed Everything

In 2020, I boarded a flight to Lusaka. I wanted to play music.

But I accidentally hit play on an audiobook: How to Be a Fierce Competitor.

That book slapped me awake.

It spoke to my business.

It exposed my excuses.

I finished it before I even landed back in Harare.

Then lockdown hit. While the world panicked, I went on a reading binge.

I read 6 business books in 21 days.

Last year I read 64.

This year I’m aiming for 100.

Reading Made Me a Better Husband, CEO, and Man

Books did what school couldn’t do.

They restructured my mindset.

Made me bolder in business.

Helped me launch new ventures.

Taught me how to lead people and manage cash.

Even helped me strengthen my marriage (yes, there are books for that too).

One book said, “Your book is your best business card.”

I took that seriously. I wrote one.

That book brought me more business than any billboard ever did.

Degrees Are Great — But Application Wins

I’ve got three papers left on my ACCA.

But I’m not in a rush to finish them.

Because I’ve realized:

I’m no longer reading to pass — I’m reading to apply.

That shift alone has grown my income, my influence, and my leadership.

Every Business Problem You’re Facing? There’s a Book for It.

Struggling with cashflow?

Leadership?

Sales?

Marketing?

Marriage?

Hiring?

Vision?

There’s a book for all of it.

The answers are already out there — just hidden between book covers.

What’s Next?

I’m not just reading books now.

I’m writing them.

My next one drops soon:

Why African Businesses Die Young

25 June 2025

Rainbow Towers, Harare

You’re invited — but only if you’re ready to start feeding your brain and leading like a lion.

Let’s Debate:

Is reading still relevant in the TikTok and YouTube era?

Can books out-teach degrees?

Should African entrepreneurs ditch the exam mindset and build a reading culture?

Let’s talk.

But most importantly, start reading.

Your breakthrough is buried in a book you keep ignoring.

See you at the top.
